七、主讲人简介：
Gay Q. Yuen, Ph.D
Dr. Gay Q. Yuen received her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis on Language Literacy and Learning from the University of Southern California (USC) and a BA in Chinese Studies at UCLA. She has served in the field of education in California for 44 years. She was a professor of teacher educationfor 29 years at California State University, Los Angeles. There, she served as the Chair of the Division of Curriculum and Instruction where she oversaw the teacher credentialing programs for elementary and secondary education, as well as more than 15 graduate education programs. She retired four years ago but returned to work at CSLA as a consultant for the Dean of the College of Education to work on special projects and programs.
Prior to her work at the university, Dr. Yuen was a teacher and administrator for the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) and the Alhambra Unified School District. Her work in education was focused primarily in the area of bilingual and multicultural education, promoting cross-cultural understanding and educational equity for Asian Americans and other minority students. Recently, her work has been focused on Mandarin immersion education for all students. She was instrumental in establish the first Mandarin immersion program at City Terrace and two other elementary schools in LAUSD.
Dr. Yuen is often called upon by local, state, national, and international education agencies to serve on committees and commissions. She was instrumental in developing statewide bilingual and ESL standards that are now the guidelines for the education and assessment of K-12 students and the credentialing of bilingual teachers. Dr. Yuen is often invited by the governments of the People’s Republic of China, Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, and Saudi Arabia to assist in their minority education programs, policies and practices.
She is the Immediate Past President of the Board of the Chinese American Museum of Los Angeles, and serves on the boards of the Asian Youth Center, the Los Angeles Chapter of the International Leadership Foundation, the President’s Asian Pacific Advisory Council of Pasadena Community College, Advisory to the Chinese Asian American Artists Association and other non-profit, NGOs, and educational organizations. As a past board member of Leadership Education for Asian Pacifics (LEAP), she helped the Southern California Asian American Owners and Operators of McDonalds and the Ronald McDonald Charities to establish the Asian American Scholarship Program in 1995. Since that time, over $500,000 scholarships has been award to southern California high schools students and non-profits of the recipients’ choices.
Named a “Local Hero” by KCET television, Dr. Yuen has received numerous awards for her work in education, women’s rights and social justice. California Assemblyman Ed Chau selected her as one of his Women of the Year in 2016, and received a Congressional Award for in 2017 and was also presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Chinese American Elected Officials in 2017.
